Skin Substitutes

There are a variety of Medicare approved skin substitute products used to treat chronic, poorly healing wounds that have been refractory (non responsive) to conventional treatment. Some skin substitutes may be infused with a placental membrane for wound management, which is composed of growth factors, native living cells, and extracellular matrix. With placental membranes, patients experience significantly higher wound closure compared to traditional substitutes. The membrane retains all three components of the placental membrane (some may include mesenchymal stem cells) along with growth factors and an extracellular matrix (ECM) to preserve endogenous cells and encourage the regrowth of damaged tissue. Collagen Wound Treatments

Athena Specialty Group utilizes collagen dressings to reduce the wound’s inflammatory response and provide a protective barrier that neutralizes bacterial growth. This antimicrobial barrier is scientifically-proven to reduce infections like MRSA and support proper wound healing. Collagen also features an extracellular matrix to extend biomechanical support to the wound.
